Go ahead and read the above-linked article about how Rachel Kuo sounded really quite unamused by the Ugly Delicious’ writers.

Radio shows, TV series, webtoons, and everything from a podcast to a meme (I THNK) requires pre-planning and some form of writing. And Ugly Delicious, as far as I could see, was  well-written. It had a badass brand combined with a very candid representation about how food is presented and delivered. David Wang is known better for his valiant efforts to smooth out wrinkles more than anything else. But not all guests bend to his will. #lol

I’ve watched a few episodes of Ugly Delicious on Netflix (before they effed up my account – totally not my fault, I swear) and I think it makes itself out to be a good talking head to present to the world what food is all about. Food doesn’t have to be aesthetically-pleasing (all the time) in order for it to be either delicious or nutritious.

Each episode examines the cultural, sociological, and culinary history of a specific popular food. Chang challenges and explores the attitudes in each dish’s lore.

Don’t get me wrong, I am far from pouring cold water of chefs’ parades because I have an incredible amount of respect for them. I tip my hat off to those who manage to remain calm, keep their cool under the self-combusting heat of a kitchen while making their dishes look like it’s artwork. It REALLY is art. OK, this is making me miss Anthony Bourdain =(

But I think the takeaway we can get from Ugly Delicious is this: there’s a whole lot more behind food than meets the eye. There are cultures, history, people, families, ingredients, geography, and traditions.

The same way people ask why do people in Korea eat Kimchi with everything, others ask why Americans roast and cut up turkey on Thanksgiving. Why turkey and only turkey? Such indignity to chickens all over the world. ;-P
